The “Weekends with the Accomplished” will provide an opportunity for participants to work with accomplished practitioners of Applied History. Applications are open to area graduate students and recent Ph.D.s who want an opportunity to acquire new skills specific to their area and topics of study.

Participants will receive:

  • Mentoring and guidance by Patty Limerick and the Visiting Scholar
  • Skill-building workshops
  • Goal setting sessions
  • Networking opportunities with both academics and non-academics
  • Preferred consideration for the Summer Workshop
  • A chance to build community with other aspiring Applied Historians
  • Certificate of Participation

This informal social gathering will allow participants to meet the Visiting Applied Historian and Patty Limerick. They will lead a group conversation focused on the upcoming sessions and get to know the participants’ areas of interest.


Saturday

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Matching Skills to Topics

9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Session 1: How to apply academic training and skill sets to real-world issues

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Session 2: How to choose a topic


1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Communication

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Session 3: How to adopt and adapt the Accomplished Scholar’s techniques to each participant’s area of interest.

3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Session 4: How to further your career by taking advantage of a range of communication tools (op-eds, talks, social media, and other mediums).


5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – Establishing Contacts

Networking Social. This event will feature the visiting Applied Historian and other CU-based historians, as well as a number of guests who work in non-academic areas relevant to participants’ work.


Sunday

10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Goal Setting

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Session 1: Lessons learned.

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Session 2: Goal setting for each participant
