The role the American West plays in providing energy will be the focus of the 31st Annual Public Land Law Conference Sept. 24-26 at The University of Montana School of Law.

“Rocky Mountain Energy Leadership: Strategies for a New Energy Future” will emphasize how laws and policies can position Rocky Mountain states to play a leadership role in sustainable energy policies.

The conference kicks off with a keynote address titled “The Power of the Rockies: Living With Energy in the Old West, the New West and the Next West” at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in the University Center Theater. The speaker, Patricia Limerick, directs the Center of the American West. Her address and the following reception at the offices of the Clark Fork Coalition, located at 140 Fourth St. W. Unit 1, are free and open to the public.

Leaders from government, industry, academia, the legal and conservation communities and more will explore opportunities and challenges faced by the Rocky Mountain region in light of growing and changing energy demands. The conference will offer a broad context of national law and policy, as well as detailed discussions of current regional issues.

Speakers will cover a variety of topics, including the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the role of renewable energy resources, reducing carbon emissions, Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s “Clean and Green” energy plan and the transborder effects of coal mining in Canada north of Glacier National Park.

The conference offers 11 Continuing Legal Education credits for attorneys. Faculty members and full-time students may attend the conference at no charge, but are asked to register.

Registration forms, conference fees and a schedule of events are online at http://www.publiclandlawconference.org

The Public Land Law Conference is presented by the Public Land and Resources Law Review, a student-run publication of UM’s School of Law, in partnership with the University’s Public Policy Research Institute.
