Demographers calculate age distributions to better understand the structure of the population. Marketers use the data to target growing age-cohorts with advertisements and products. The most obviously feature of the national and most state population pyramids is the post-war "baby-boom" bulge now in the 30-50 years-old range. The projected 2025 pyramid is a best-guess of birth, death, and immigration rates, and shows that demographers expect relatively high fertility and immigration rates in the future, which keep the pyramid from becoming top-heavy as with so many other industrial countries.
