The graph shows resident population for decadal census counts and mid-decade estimates since 1940 plus Census Bureau projections to 2025. The year 2000 population value is the estimate made in the mid-1990s. We use it here rather than the new census count because it was the basis for the future projections. We'll update the graphs when new projections are made based on the 2000 count. The 2000 actual count for Idaho is 1,293,953, a 28.56% increase over 1990, making Idaho the fifth-fastest growing state in the nation. Idaho grew slower than most other western states until the 1990s, and showed a marked effect of the energy bust in the 1980s. Its rapid recent growth means that the new projections, when available, will probably show much faster growth into the future than projected here.
