The graph shows resident population for decadal census counts and mid-decade estimates since 1940 plus Census Bureau projections to 2025. The year 2000 population value is the estimate made in the mid-1990s. We use it here rather than the new census count because it was the basis for the future projections. We'll update the graphs when new projections are made based on the 2000 count. The 2000 actual count for Arizona is 5,130,632, a 40% increase over 1990, making Arizona the second fastest growing state in the nation. Arizona is certainly a "growth state" with growth quickening after 1970. These projections probably understate future growth and we suspect the projections based on the 2000 census will increase the expected future population of Arizona.
