The graph shows resident population for decadal census counts and mid-decade estimates since 1940 plus Census Bureau projections to 2025.
The year 2000 population value is the estimate made in the mid-1990s. We use it here rather than the new census count because it was the
basis for the future projections. We'll update the graphs when new projections are made based on the 2000 count, and would expect the new
projections to increase the future growth based on the larger-than-estimated population actually counted in the 2000 census. The 2000
actual count for the 11 western states is 61,359,463, a 20% increase over 1990. Note the remarkably steady growth of the region, even
during the economic down-turn as energy prices busted in the 1980s.
