These are the ethnicity patterns from the 1990 census. We'll add the 2000 data when it is complete, though new options for reporting
ethnicity will complicate any comparison. Hispanic background dominates the Southwest, and much of the nation's Native American
population resides in the West. The first two maps show that the West, especially its northern tier, also remains notably
