Center of the American West Internship Program

Summer 2008 Internships

The Center of the American West offers internship opportunities for undergraduates (junior and senior) to work in public and private organizations on projects that will enhance their understanding of Western American topics and issues.

These 1-3 credit hour internships foster students' development as community leaders working for a sustainable West. Possible projects include management of natural resources, the search for resolution of cultural conflicts, and the design and implementation of public environmental policy. These career-building internships offer the kind of learning that only "real life experience" can provide.

  • Interns work 40 hours on the job for each academic credit.
  • Some internships are paid, others are not. (Please see job listings.)
  • The summer internship period begins June 2 and ends August 8, with some exceptions. (Please review job listings carefully for details.)
  • Interns attend an orientation at Center of the American West where they meet their faculty sponsors and other student interns. Faculty sponsors serve as mentors, and provide a Western Studies academic context during the course of the internship. Students will receive reading assignments relevant to their internship organization or project. They are required to turn in weekly journal entries, give oral presentations about their internship, and write a final reflection paper.
